1ST DAY OF SUMMER 2009 | LA PUBLIC BEACH RECOMMENDATIONS

Today is officially the first day of summer 2009! In honor of this momentous occasion I thought it would only be appropriate to let you know the inside scoop on some of LA's best beaches. There's a beach for every occasion, weather it be surfing, tanning, or just plain people-watching. Check it out below:

We'll work our way down the coast north-to-south.

Leo Carillo - 1.5 miles of beach for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, surf fishing and beachcombing. Leo Carillo is best know for its campgrounds that features great back-country hiking, nature walks & campfires. The park is located 28 miles northwest of Santa Monica on the Pacific Coast Highway. via CAparks It's a little bit of a drive from the city, but well worth it if you're looking for a mini-getaway with some good friends.

Zuma Beach - One of the most popular and clean beach's in LA, Zuma is known for it's great surf and white sands that span almost 3 miles. This beach has tons of public parking, changing and shower facilities, and a handful of quaint restaurants within walking distance.

Santa Monica Beach - 3.5 miles of beach with sunshine almost all year round, Santa Monica Beach is the destination for someone that wants more than just beach time. This beach has plenty of beach volleball courts and with attractions nearby such as the Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Promenade , there certainly won't be a shortage of entertainment.

Venice Beach - The biggest tourist destination of all the LA beaches, Venice is best known for it's Ocean-front walk and great people-watching. I suggest Venice if you're looking to cool off and relax; take a nice stroll down the boardwalk and check out some of the great stores and eating spots along the way. Don't forget, Venice Beach is also home to Muscle Beach (the outdoor gym where musclemen soak in the awkward stares of onlookers wondering if their taking HGH or steroids..) If you're in Venice in the evening make sure to hit up some bars on Main Street and/or Abbot Kinney!

Marina Del Rey - Romantic much? If you like long walks on the beach, beautiful views and boats floating by in the sunset...this is your destination. Within walking distance of Venice Beach, Marina Del Rey offers a more local beach feel. MDR is the perfect destination for a nice quiet evening stroll with undisturbed beach time, bring a blanket and some fruit if you're looking to seal the deal ;)

Manhattan Beach - Just 3 miles south of LAX, Manhattan Beach has lots of activities for beachgoers. A scenic 928-foot-long pier at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard offers fishing all year round and the Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium at the end of the pier is free to the public, which includes a knarley Shark Tank. (that's right I said knarley, brah!) Enjoy a 9-hole public golf course, surfing, and volleyball at the beach, and Sunday afternoon concerts in Polliwog Park during this summer. The city is host to tons of events; including the International Surf Festival, volleyball and tennis tournaments, & numerous running and bicycle races! via About Make sure to check our Hermosa Beach Pier nearby for some local watering holes.

Redondo Beach - This is the ultimate LA weekend getaway. Redondo Beach is home to multitude of attractions. The beach itself is very clean with lifeguards on duty and families enjoying the sun n' surf. Redondo also has a Pier with great fishing, restaurants, food stands, and souvenir shops. They even have a 16.5 ft. long White Shark on display! If you're looking for an activity, Redondo rents our bicycles & kayaks. Like Boat rides? Take a ride on their 70 ft speedboat that fits 140 passengers; available weekends and holiday afternoons. via About

Looking to do a bonfire? Check out Dockweiler Beach. Located in Playa Del Rey (just south of Marina Del Rey), Dockweiler Beach has three-miles of Los Angeles shoreline that's rarely crowded. Dockweiler is the only beach in LA County where you can have a bonfire.

Want to get naked? Check out San Onofre Beach. This popular nude beach is located just north of Camp Pendleton in San Diego County. I know it's not in LA, but it's the closest nude beach! After a storm of controversy in summer, 2008, an Orange County judge ruled in August that nudity is legal at Trail 6 in San Onofre. via About
